Partnership with Parents

Patty Lally & Brenda Perry, Lower Elementary Room 4 teachers

We’re thankful for so many aspects of teaching at LMS that it was difficult to choose just one topic to write about. When pressed to decide what makes our school a great community we always think of how we partner with parents to guide their children to become peacemakers.

We asked the students of LE4 who helps our classroom, other than the teachers. The immediate response was “our parents”. We then asked in what ways they could remember parents helping us in just this year. The list they created was extensive:

Apple Picking Chaperones
Apple Bakers & Servers
Celebrity Readers
Washing Classroom Laundry
Bringing Flowers for the Snack Table
Typing Fall Poems
Bakers & Buyers for Tastes of Fall
Teaching the 12 Days of Christmas
Bakers & Buyers for Secret Peacemakers
Harvest Fest Bakers
Earth-Day Co-Lab
Classroom Pictures
Family of Authors Display
Scientific Seed Study
Sound experiment materials
Designing Greek Temples
Making Greek Nameplates
Directing Minotaur Play
Making Greek Frescos
Greek Feast Chefs

We added to the list our own ideas about how parents help the classroom behind the scene. They laminate, cut, glue and type to prepare many materials in our classroom. Also, we can’t forget the organizing that comes from our room parents.

Partnering with parents goes well beyond volunteering for and in the classroom. As classroom teachers we partner with parents in many ways to help guide the growth and development of their child. We establish open lines of communication, observe and work with their child, talk and discuss their child’s progress, and make and assess goals for their child. We are fortunate that LMS embraces the three-year cycle in a classroom, giving teachers and parents the time to build their partnership, develop its strength and cultivate the next generation of peacemakers.
