LMS 5K Run/Walk & Kids Fun Run: How Your Ideas Help Create our Community

Amy Hutter, LMS Board Clerk
Tomorrow at 9:30 am, the LMS community will come together to host LMS’ 3rd Annual 5K Run/Walk and Kids’ Fun Run. You have seen the posters, opened the emails, and the day is finally here. But this wonderful community building and fund raising event began four years ago as just an idea from one of your fellow parents, Monica Massaro. An avid runner, she brought her concept of the 5K to the Community Development Committee and four years later we are hosting an annual event that has almost 200 runners, 150 from the LMS community, and generates over $6,500 for the school. Through Monica’s involvement with the Community Development Committee we now have a genuine community building (and fund raising!) event that has become one of the highlights on LMS’ spring calendar. The creation of this event is just one example of how LMS parents can have a direct and meaningful impact on LMS. But, we need more ideas! Our hope is that more parents will share their passions with LMS.
This event is run by the Community Development Committee, one of five Board Committees within which the majority of the work of the Board of Directors is accomplished. However, as is evident from the 5K event, the work in these committees is by no means accomplished by Board members alone. Each committee typically has two board members but the rest of each committee (about 5-10 members) is populated by parents, like Monica, and LMS faculty and staff who bring their own passions and talents to the committee. Here are the five current committees:
  • Community Development Committee
  • Diversity Committee
  • Finance Committee
  • Committee on Governance
  • Sustainability Committee
These committees serve several purposes. First, they accomplish the work of the Board, which revolves around the specific goals that the Board sets each year. Second, these committees provide an opportunity for parents to take part in the work of the school in a concrete and manageable way. (On average, each committee meets once a month.) Lastly, the committees enable the Board of Directors to work closely with parents to identify parents who are interested in becoming more involved with LMS in the short term and parents who might be interested in joining the Board of Directors in the long term.
As Board members, several of us are in attendance at every school event. At these events please feel free to ask us about committee and Board work. We always are looking for opportunities to get more parents involved. In the interim, if you would like to talk about Board Committees in detail please contact Board President, Mignon Duffy, at
