Helpful hints for a successful start of school
No matter how excited you and your child may be about the start of school at LMS, the actual drop-off at school that first day can be an anxious time – often more so for the parents than for the child. Here are some steps you as parent can take to help make this process easier for you, and thus, easier for your child.
Arrival routine: Children find it easier when they feel like they are leaving you instead of perceiving that you are leaving them. This is one reason our drop-off procedure works so well; your child gets out of the car with a teacher and says good-bye to you rather than you bringing the child to the classroom and leaving him. This makes the car the last place your child sees you before school, and it makes sense to him that it’s the first place he sees you when school is over. To get a sense of what our arrival system looks like, we have a video on our focus page:
  1. A child picks up on her parent’s mood. Conveying a sense of reassurance, remaining calm and cheerful, tells the child that school is a safe place to go; you trust the school, so the child will too. You can say, “Here comes Aline! She’s going to get you out of the car. Have a wonderful day, and I’ll see you after school!”
  2. Your child might cry at drop off, no matter how calm you are. The teachers will call you when she has calmed down to let you know she is okay. Often the crying stops before she gets to her classroom!
Getting to know the school and teachers as much as possible helps parents feel more assured as the school year begins. So, please come to the start of school events:
  • Back to School Night: you have a chance to hear from the teachers, spend time in the classroom, and talk some more with fellow parents; you meet the other adults in the LMS community your child will get to know: administrators, specials teachers, teachers from the other classrooms.
  • Classroom orientation: The day after Labor Day, from 2:30 – 3:30 in the afternoon. You and your child can come into the classroom, meet the teachers, find your child’s cubby.
  • All-School playdate: Following orientation, from 3:30-5:00 on Tuesday.
  • Welcome Coffee: Held the first Monday after the start of school, from 8:30 – 9:30. A chance for parents to gather and chat.
  • Talk with the teachers: One of your child’s teachers will call you during the first couple of weeks of school to check in. This is a good time to ask questions. You will also have a Parent-Teacher conference at the end of the first month of school, where you can talk about your hopes and dreams for your child, and the teachers will let you know how the transition to school is going for your child in those first weeks.
