Where can a student take a swimming lesson, practice counting to 100 and build a fort all in the same day? HORIZONS at LMS - that's where!

We are planning for our sixth summer hosting underserved students from Waltham, Lexington and neighboring towns. We are excited to welcome 55 three to ten year olds from our neighboring community for six consecutive weeks of learning and fun. All students learn how to swim, or have access to scheduled water play blocks; older students travel to a local pool for structured lessons, while our pre-school group remain on campus for time at the water table, a chance to frolic in the sprinkler and splash in the kiddie pools.

The HORIZONS at LMS Program strives to strike an appropriate balance between academic learning and meaningful recreational activities, which will be further enhanced by the recent acquisition of 19 additional acres of land for outdoor exploration.  We are extremely proud that participating students are exposed to the Montessori Philosophy and feel confident that this unique summer experience shapes student development and enhances the learning process that takes place at their respective home schools during the academic year. In short, we are privileged to welcome students back to HORIZONS at LMS each summer through their middle school years!

Lexington Montessori School is proud to serve as an affiliate of HORIZONS National, a 20-year-old organization striving to build brighter futures for underserved children.  The HORIZONS program model effectively combines high-quality academics with cultural enrichment and confidence-building opportunities. LMS serves as one of only two program site locations in Massachusetts and hosts the youngest students in the national network. In addition, LMS is currently the only participating Montessori school. HORIZONS is designed to have children maintain and make progress academically during the six-week summer program, ready to start the new school year in the fall.
What does the summer program entail?
  • Literacy and math are central to the academic programming
  • Educational and recreational field trips allow the students to make connections with the curriculum.
  • Practical life lessons take place during structured meal times and classroom activities
  • Outdoor activities and lessons take place in our host school’s 19 acres of preserved land
  • Swimming lessons and recreational swimming for elementary age students
  • Water activities for all preschool age children.
The continuation and success of the program depend on the generous support from the community. Your gift allows us to provide transportation, serve two meals daily and teach students swimming, a valuable life skill. Please invest in the future; your donation helps to ensure the annual operation of this very special summer program. To donate, click on the orange 'GIVE TO HORIZONS AT LEXINGTON MONTESSORI SCHOOL' box.

The overall goal is to have each child attend the program through his/her middle school years.  This long term relationship establishes close ties allowing for deep knowledge of each child’s unique learning style and needs, and the privilege of watching each child develop and grow as an individual.
