This month, we continue our classroom discussions centered around peace and kindness. We're talking to children about the light (love) that all humans carry within them, and our shared responsibility to shine our own light while helping others do the same.
As we move ahead with our anti-bias curriculum, we're beginning conversations about multiculturalism, language diversity, and immigration. Some of the books being shared in classrooms or by Sara, our librarian, include: Mango, Abuela and Me by Meg Medina, Say My Name by Joana Ho, I Dream of Popo by Livia Blackburne, Nimoshom and His Bus by Penny M. Thomas, Mommy's Khimar by Jamilah Thomkins-Bigelow, Mommy's Hometown by Hope Lim, Tomatoes for Neela by Padma Lakshmi, Dear Juno by Sojung Pak, When Lola Visits by Michelle Sterling, The Rice In the Pot Goes Round and Round by Wendy Wan-Long Shang, Imagine by Juan Felipe Herrera, A Kurta to Remember by Gauri Dalvi Pandya, and In My Mosque by M.O. Yuksel among others.
We're so grateful for the abundance of children’s literature that celebrates these themes and invite you to explore more titles at your local library or independent bookstore. A family trip to the library to find stories about children who speak another language at home can be a fun and meaningful shared experience.
