This month, students in the LE program will be reading stories of immigration. We have a wonderful variety of books about people from many different backgrounds who have moved to this side of the world and who together make up the fabric of what we call America today.
At LMS, we honor the diversity of our backgrounds and celebrate our many cultural practices. In LE History lessons, teachers provide children with a framework to understand that while all people share the same fundamental needs, the ways we meet those needs vary — reflecting the geography, culture, and traditions of the places our ancestors lived.
Some of the books your children’s teachers are reading include Where Are You From? by Jamie Kim, Oscar’s American Dream by Barry Wittenstein, A Different Pond by Bao Phi and Thi Bui, The Wall in the Middle of the Book by Jon Agee, Mama’s Nightingale by Edwidge Danticat, La Frontera by Alfredo Alva and Claudia Navarro, Border Crossings by Sneed B. Collard III, Everything Grows in Jiddo’s Garden by Jenana A. Matari, Areli Is a Dreamer by Areli Morales, Some of Us by Rajani LaRocca and Huy Voun Lee, and Finding Home by Gwen Agna and Shelley Rotner, among others.
If you’re looking for something to read with your children during the Thanksgiving season that relates to the early immigration of European people to this continent, I recommend Keepunumuk by Danielle Hill (Mashpee Wampanoag), Alexis Bunten, and Anthony Perry (Chickasaw). I will be reading it to students via Zoom on Monday evening — you are warmly welcome to join.
