This month, across the United States and throughout the Americas, people reflect on the so-called “discovery” of America.
At LMS, we honor our Indigenous ancestors by resting on Indigenous Peoples’ Day and taking time to learn about the history of colonization. In the Lower Elementary classrooms, students are exploring themes related to the “discovery” of lands long inhabited by other living beings. We discuss the encounter between two cultures -- what it means to arrive in a new place, and how we can welcome those who come anew.
Some of the books your children’s teachers will be sharing include Discovery by Joseph Brosky, Encounter by Brittany Luby (a favorite of mine), Encounter by Jane Yolen, and We Are Water Protectors by Carole Lindstrom (Anishinaabe/Metis).
If you’re looking for a way to observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day as a family, here’s a link to a local celebration happening over the weekend. I’ll be attending and think it would be a wonderful experience for you and your children as well.
