In the beginning of October the children were given a chance to observe and handle ocean specimens before they were invited to make an ocean painting. The children used tempera cakes and white crayons to create resist art. Resist art is a technique that uses a wax or oil to repel another medium such as paint to create layers and texture.
For the remainder of October we focused on watercolors. The children began by using water color pallets and experimenting with different techniques like wet on dry, wet on wet, scrumbling, splatting, blending, and bleed to create their art. Children also used liquid watercolors, yarn, and salt to experiment with hydrolysis, a process through which water melts salt and dries to crystallize. Using string to paint helps children strengthen their hand eye coordination.
