In December students practiced forming geometric solids with clay. Kneading and working with clay helps the children strengthen their hand muscles. Additionally each classroom worked together to decorate a backdrop as decoration for their Winter Celebration.
When we returned in January the students explored mixing tertiary colors. Tertiary colors are created by mixing primary colors with secondary colors. The children were encouraged to experiment making different colors to create a painting.
Next we began working on self portraits. We discussed how everyone’s skin is a different shade of brown and students added black, white, and primary colors to brown paint to mix their unique shade of skin and hair. After they mixed the color of their skin and hair they used the resulting colors to paint large sheets of paper. After their skin and hair were complete they began cutting and assembling their collage portrait. This multistep work requires painting, drawing, cutting, gluing, and most importantly concentration!
