In November the students worked with a variety of media to express their creativity. We read Beautiful Oops by Barney Saltzberg. Beautiful Oops reminds students that everyone makes mistakes, and teaches them that a mistake is an opportunity to create something beautiful. Students were given damaged paper to create a drawing on. In a continuation of beautiful oops students used yarn and liquid water colors to experiment with creating patterns and mixing colors. Finally we read All the Colors We Are: The Story of How We Get our Skin Color by Katie Kissinger. Students learned that everybody's skin is a different shade of brown and that we get our skin color from our ancestors, the sun, and melanin. Students compared their skin to brown sheets of paper to find a close match and then drew a self or family portrait.
