We have had a busy and exciting wrap up to our fall farming season! Our toddlers helped plant garlic around the growing dome, learning how to use a dibbler to make deep holes before gently placing the cloves into the soil. We then covered the beds with compost and mulched them with salt marsh hay. This process helps protect the garlic as the cloves begin to grow roots in the fall. In the spring, green shoots will emerge, followed by a summer harvest. By fall, the garlic will be cured and ready to eat and plant again!
We also planted spring bulbs before the ground froze and are looking forward to the bright colors they will bring once the snow melts. As colder weather arrived, we shifted our focus to winter projects. These included learning about vermicomposting and caring for our composting worms, as well as growing pea shoots for food tasting this week.
Toddler farming takes a winter break and will resume after March break. During the winter months, we will continue our weekly food tastings, so be sure to check classroom posts to see what foods we are exploring together.
