Our Kindergarten farmers are wrapping up a beautiful fall farming term. Even as the days grow colder, our saffron crocus bulbs are still hanging on, with a few brave sprigs of green peeking out from beneath the snow. While the temperatures have been too cold for them all to bloom, we have stayed busy with many other end-of-season farming tasks.
Over the last few weeks we took care of our vermicomposting worms by feeding them leaves and newspaper, explored different types of seeds, looked through seed catalogs, and mulched the garden beds to help protect them through the winter months. Along the way, we enjoyed tasting crunchy fall carrots, French winter lettuce, and fresh pea shoots.
It has been a joy to watch these students grow over the years. Many of them began farming as first-year students during the winter term, then continued farming the following spring as middlers, and have now farmed through the fall season, all the way to the edge of winter where they first began. Seeing how much they have learned and how confidently they work in the garden, right alongside the growing plants, has been truly special. I look forward to farming with them again next year as lower elementary students.
