First Years Farming Update

LMS Farm

Our first year farmers have been busy since returning from winter break and starting their farming term! We’ve been getting to know the farm by exploring the plants inside the growing dome using all of our senses. We practice noticing the colors and shapes of plants with our eyes, smelling them with our noses, touching them gently with our hands, and even listening closely with our ears.

We’ve also been hard at work growing our own microgreens. Using seed shakers, we carefully planted tiny seeds into soil we prepared ourselves, then gently misted them to keep them moist. In just two weeks they were ready to harvest and we used scissors to release them from the roots before washing and drying them. We’ve had the chance to plant pea seeds too, making small holes with our fingers and watering them with care.

At the end of each class, we use our sense of taste by sampling different winter crops we’ve grown. So far, our harvests have included red clover sprouts, alfalfa sprouts, fenugreek sprouts, and brassica microgreens, and we’ve enjoyed nibbling at these green treats.
